Nashville Bound...maybe

Bryan got into Vanderbilt!! We have been on cloud 9 since Friday afternoon when we got the email...thinking for sure he didn't get in as it was the deadline to hear by that day. We celebrated all weekend and dreamt of our new life in Nashville...

Monday morning brought a sobering awakening that my job may not be as flexible as I thought, with the possibility that I may not actually have a job with my company should we move to Nashville.

We have some tough decisions to make in the next few weeks, it's either Maryland or Vanderbilt, though both good options. If we moved to DC I would be able to keep my job, no problem, however Nashville--for whatever reason--is going to be harder to work out. The other problem is that Vanderbilt tuition is considerably higher than Maryland, but its also a better school and where we both want to be. We would move to Nashville no question if I definitely had a job--we NEED an income to support us while he is in school. This is one of those times in life that the adultness of the situation is getting to me...we might have to go against what we'd rather do to survive financially, but the risk brings more reward should we choose Vanderbilt. Needless to say it's been a pretty tough week.

  1. Congrats to you both! I know that has got to be one heck of a decision to make! Nashville is FABULOUS...big city with a small town feel. Can't wait to hear what you decide. Let me know if you make the move...would love a shopping buddy. xoxo

  3. Congratulations! How exciting! I know that the stress of the decision must be tough...but it's not a decision between one good and one bad option. Both are good options, and whichever you choose -- you will make it work!

  4. Congratulations! I know for my husband it helped him choose schools by comparing post-graduation data, particularly the kind of data career services offices have a harder time manipulating for their purposes such as what percent of grads stay in-state to work after graduation versus leave the state. So if you didn't want to raise your family and live your whole life in TN, you'd want to see how likely it would be that he could get a job somewhere else, just for example.

My husband also found it helpful to look at what percent of graduates went into BigLaw jobs, public-interest jobs, etc. He found that among the schools he was considering, there was virtually no percent change, even though some schools were ranked several spots higher or several spots lower than one another, all around 14-16 percent in this instance. So for him, his employment prospects being equal, he chose the school with the cheapest tuition and cost-of-living.

Just what helped us decide back in the day!

    Good luck and congrats again!

  5. Congrats on the acceptance - but I'm sorry that it's causing so much frustration! Whatever you choose for whatever reason you pick, it just has to be the right decision for YOU and yours. Just concentrate on the positives!
